Orthopedic / Podiatric Pathology
The field of orthopedics and podiatry are wide ranging. Pathologists get involved with these specialties in a varied number of circumstances but primarily in the diagnosis of bone tumors, soft tissue tumors or infections such as osteomyelitis. Amputations of toes or full extremities also come to the pathologist for evaluation in order to document infections, vascular disease or tumors. A bone biopsy will often require special treatment with decalcifying procedures by the pathology team in order to make it a successful evaluation.
